u ever noticed that a lot of people these days talk about “lifestyle”?
It seems everyone has a deep desire to improve or define their own lifestyle and what it means to them.
Part of that desire for a better lifestyle usually incorporates
overseas travel to exotic destinations. I’m sure that if you are reading
this, you too value overseas travel as a luxury that you like to
indulge in.
Nothing wrong with that…we all know travel broadens the mind and increases your horizons.
One place I like to travel to for the best untouched natural lifestyle in the world is the island of bali
Sure the average Balinese person doesn’t have the mod cons we take
for granted here in the west but what they forgo in materialistic
possessions they more than make up with in traditional lifestyle.
Let’s have a look why shall we?
The majority of the Balinese are involved directly in good honest
primary industry. You think of Mother Nature and living off the land…you
think of farming, fishing, food trading and natural craftsmanship. This
covers the majority of the Balinese lifestyle.
Add into that mix a fair portion of arts and crafts such as timber
furniture and ornaments and you start to get a feel for just how
simplistic the lifestyle is. Why over complicate things hey?
These skills have been passed down from generation to generation and
seem to be the norm from now until whenever. Even with the boom in
western tourism to the island of bali the majority of people rely on the primary industry for their survival.
Another aspect of Balinese lifestyle that becomes very evident when
you have visited and lived amongst the people, is their communal village
lifestyle.
All of the village’s events such as marriages, ceremonies,
cremations, arts festivals, celebrations and decisions on farming are
decided by the community institution called a “Banjar”.
The “Banjar” is probably best described as a quazi-council or local
government. They administer the day to day life of the village people
and make decisions on behalf of the greater whole of the local
community. A “Banjar” usually consist of 50 to 150 family members who
gather at a set location to discuss the decisions relating to the local
people.
Another aspect of the Balinese lifestyle that I find so appealing is
just how easy a westerner can “infiltrate” their community. If you are
friendly and upfront with the locals and show a genuine interest in
getting to know them as real people, you can’t help but be invited into
their circle.
Once here you can truly begin to understand why the local lifestyle
is so relaxed and stress free. This stress-less life style is the centre
of why so many tourists head to Bali for their chill time, to get their
fix. Some tourists do an annual pilgrimage…like visiting Mecca…just to
turn up, tune in and drop out in Bali.
Now the big new trend is for westerners investing in local Balinese
real estate. Once you own a golden piece of Bali and you become a
local…you too can share the ultimate Balinese lifestyle.
For us who still have years of working in front of us to be able to
afford a piece of Bali…a quick holiday every now again will just have to
do to get our fix
